Lake Wanaka • 2005-2006
Simplistic street planting of native tussock berm's, retained by stone feature walls, compliment the bold architectural design of the luxury boutique lodge and settle it in to the Wanaka landscape. Clever earth mounding and naturalistic plantings surround the property and blend into neighbouring gardens giving privacy and shelter from the harsh Wanaka wind. Winding paths of local river stone meander around the garden leading the explorer through a series of private garden spaces, from a herb garden with seating allowing guests to breathe in the wonderful scents with their morning cup of coffee, to a hot tub house flowing out onto private decks over a pond dramatic with its night lit cascading waterfall and the sound of moving water. Gardens showcase New Zealand alpine and native plants and are designed to allow the client to continue the evolving process of creating a garden, by adding their own individual touch with further plantings. The seasonal changes so spectacular in Central Otago are not forgotten with the combination of exotic trees such as dogwoods, maples and magnolias and fruit trees quite at home among the natives. Thoughtful screening ensures functional areas such as outdoor storage and access paths are practically incorporated without impacting the beauty of the garden and a potager kitchen garden and espalier fruit trees turn an often hidden boring part of the garden into a structured feature important to the focus of the lodge. Throughout the space levels are cleverly defined and create many informal seating opportunities which guests can use as they wish, making the garden adaptable to change throughout the seasons and to the requirements of its varying visitors.

Client Comment: "Planning a large cold climate garden was a big challenge for us, after gardening in a sub tropical area of Australia. We relied heavily on Georgie’s expertise. She is extremely professional and was also prepared to listen to our ideas and incorporate the plants I have always wanted to grow in the design whilst retaining a uniquely New Zealand feel and utilising native plants of the region." http://www.tiritirilodge.com/
